Sherman College Celebrates 25 Years of Chiropractic Excellence

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic. It all began with one man who had a dream.

In the mind of Thomas A. Gelardi, the founder of Sherman College, the chiropractic profession had a need. Helping to meet that need became his dream. Gelardi, a doctor of chiropractic, sensed the necessity for an institution that, within an academically and intelluctually stimulating environment, remained fully consistent with the goals and objectives of his profession. He envisioned a college where the natural health benefits of chiropractic could be explored, advanced and taught, then exported worldwide for the ultimate good of humanity.

With the establishment of Sherman College in 1973, Thom Gelardi's dream to fill chiropractic's need began to be realized. Gelardi served as president of the college until his retirement in 1996 when he was succeeded by David B. Koch, DC, a 1980 graduate of Sherman College. Gelardi currently serves as chairman of the college's Board of Trustees.

In early 1973, Sherman College purchased 50 acres of land on Springfield Road which would later become its permanent location. Operation of the college began in temporary quarters located on East Main Street in downtown Spartanburg, South Carolina. Because of increased enrollment, Sherman College relocated to a larger temporary facility in 1975.

Sherman College was the first chiropractic college established in the southeast, and the first successful chiropractic college established in the United States since World War II!

Today, Sherman College continues to grow rapidly. The addition of a $3.9 million, 36,000-square-foot Student Activities/Classroom Building to the campus will take student life and classroom instuction to a new level. This exciting new building will become the center of student life on campus. Located next to the E.C. Taylor Building and across from the Mack & Kitty Scallon Building, it will complete an intimate triad of buildings. Ground breaking is scheduled for May 1999.
